About the books:

Presence by Angus Allman

So here you are. Through a series of chances, you find yourself at a séance. The man before you, typing away on his laptop, presents a curious piece of writing: a short story by the Italian writer Cesare Pavese. It's dreamlike but vivid: the calloused hands, the scarlet poppies. Who is he, this translator? Can you trust him? What kind of faith do you have in this man who claims to channel the voice of the dead?

Sappho: A Translating by Grace Calk

Through dream and sleep, the translator Grace reaches out to grasp strands of Sappho in the poet's surviving verse. The poetry Grace creates by translating these fragments over and over turn loss into abundance, as these (re)interpretations illustrate the depth of the Ancient Greek lexicon, the complexity of Sappho's lyric verse and the diverging choices inherent to the art of translation.

About the translators:

Angus Allman is a translator and poet based just outside Cambridge. He works from German and Italian into English and has a particular interest in literature from northern Italy, including South Tyrol. He has recently graduated with an MA in Literary Translation from the University of East Anglia. When he’s not translating, he works as a software engineer, organises poetry events, and is director of the Cambridge Poetry Festival.

Grace Calk is poet and Ancient Greek translator. She holds an MA in Literary Translation from the University of East Anglia and a BA from St. John’s College, Annapolis. Grace has studied Ancient Greek for over thirteen years, beginning in her early teens. Her work focuses on methods of formal experimentation that shed new light on ancient literature.

Jenny Caitlyn Lee is a writer and translator from Wales who works with Taiwanese Mandarin, Welsh and English. She likes writing about language, place and body, and how they stabilise and de-stabilise identity. Her work is featured in UEA MA Anthologies 2025, and in an upcoming queer Welsh poetry anthology. She is a co-founder of Translators' House Press
