About the book:
Temperate rainforest may once have covered up to one-fifth of Britain, inspiring Celtic druids, Welsh wizards, Romantic poets, and Arthur Conan Doyle’s most loved creations. Though only fragments now remain, they are home to a dazzling variety of luminous life-forms. In this awe-inspiring investigation, Guy Shrubsole travels through the Western Highlands and the Lake District, down to the rainforests of Wales, Devon, and Cornwall to map these spectacular lost worlds for the first time. This is the extraordinary tale of one person’s quest to find Britain’s lost rainforests – and bring them back.
About the author:
Guy Shrubsole is the author of three books, Who Owns England?, The Lost Rainforests of Britain, both of which were Sunday Times bestsellers, and most recently, The Lie of the Land, which was shortlisted for the Westminster Book Awards 2024 and shortlisted for the 2025 Wainwright Prize for Conservation Writing.
The Lost Rainforests of Britain won The Wainwright Prize for Writing on Conservation, 2023 and was shortlisted for The Richard Jefferies Award, 2022. It was also the Sunday Times Science Book of the Year for 2022. In May 2023 Waterstones selected The Lost Rainforests of Britain as their Book of the Month.
Guy has written widely for publications including the Guardian, New Statesman and New Scientist.
Guy also works as an environmental campaigner, and has worked for Rewilding Britain, Friends of the Earth, the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture.
In 2025 Guy was shortlisted for the inaugural Unwin Award – which ‘recognises non-fiction writers in the earlier stages of their careers as authors, whose work is considered to have made a significant contribution to the world.’
Our refund policy:
If you would like to return your book we ask that it is in a resalable condition. You would need to organise delivery to the shop (preferably in person) and we would evaluate it's condition in store. We reserve the right to refuse. We prefer to do exchanges if there is something else in the shop that you might be interested in (we are a small business and refunds cost us money). Any refund would take into account the fee that Shopify charges us on sale.
