As it is a free event we would appreciate if you bought the book from us as that allows us to keep running events like this. However if you have a copy already feel free to sign up for just a ticket.

If you would like to book a place but you already have the book you can do that here.

Once you have signed up we will send you an email confirmation (this is separate to the automatic email from Shopify to confirm payment). We will then send an email when the book is ready to pick up. This may be included in the initial email if we already have the stock.

Translated fiction book club runs every other month, the months in between we have a general book club.

About the book:

It was an afternoon at the beginning of that summer . . .

Marga is about to turn thirteen. Whiling away muggy afternoons in the small fisherman’s town of Paso Chico, she watches her favourite soap on TV and waits for something, anything, to happen.

Almost like an apparition, Recio arrives: disrupting the silence of siesta and revealing the strange, twisted dynamics of the town’s inhabitants.

As a cargo ship waits on the viscous river of this hot, humid town, a sea of mud and secrets is unleashed, love and violence colliding as generational traumas and age-old superstitions come to the fore. Haunting and wry, Eugenia Ladra’s debut is an elemental fever dream of burning desire and coming of age.

About the author:

Eugenia Ladra (1992, Montevideo) holds a degree in Communication and a master’s degree in Creative Writing. Carnada (‘Bait’), her debut, was a finalist for the IESS Prize in Italy and has been published in Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Spain, and Italy. In 2025, she received the Bartolomé Hidalgo Prize in the Revelation in Fiction category and an honourable mention in the Literature Prize.

About the translator:

Miriam Tobin is a literary translator from London, working from Spanish into English. She studied in Edinburgh and Barcelona, where she lived for some years, and later completed her MA in Literary Translation at UEA. Her work has appeared in publications such as Southwest Review and The Dial, and her translation of Laura Baeza’s short story collection Una grieta en la noche is forthcoming from MTO Press.
