Join us for an evening with Barbara Hughes-Moore to celebrate the publication of her book alongside a gothic poetry night. Barbara will talk a little about the origins of the book and will also be sharing some of her gothic poetry. Afterwards there will be an open mic - so please bring your scary, horror-themed work if you would like to read! The theme is intentionally broad: from the mundane to the macabre, the spooky to the spine-chilling, and everything from mild anxiety to deep existential dread!! There will be one copy of the book available that Barbara is giving away! We will be putting names into a Gothic goblet and one lucky winner will go home with The Criminal in Gothic Fiction and Contemporary Law!
When: 29/7/26 18:30 start (doors 18:15)
Where: 26a Crwys Road, CF24 4NL

About the book:
The Criminal in Gothic Fiction and Contemporary Law: Literary and Legal Doubles’ is the culmination of all my Gothic legal learning to date. It traipses through the mud and scree of criminal legal history and rummages through the dusty attics that law might prefer to keep under lock and key. The book calls us to remember why and how we assign responsibility, the reasons we should be sceptical of labels like ‘criminal’ and ‘monster’, and why it is important to remember that we are never far from our Gothic past.
From Dorian Gray to Dracula and Jekyll and Hyde, it excavates the strange relationship between myth and memory in literature and law, and how law might just be the scariest monster of all.
About the author:
Dr Barbara Hughes-Moore is a writer, poet, and lecturer based in Cardiff. Her teaching, research and creative work are inspired by the Gothic, haunted by the spectres of loves lost and lives unled. Her short story ‘Echo & Narcissus’ was shortlisted for the 2026 Parracombe Prize and her poems and short fiction have featured in These Pages Sing, Horror Scribes, The Birdcage, Roath Writers, and The Folks. Barbara currently teaches Law at Cardiff University and her debut academic monograph, ‘The Criminal in Gothic Fiction and Contemporary Law: Literary and Legal Doubles’ will be published by Routledge this summer.
